When someone dies by suicide that person’s online social media profile often becomes a hub for friends and family to talk about the suicide and memorialize the person who died. Exposure to suicide, whether through a personal connection or through the media, is an established risk factor for suicide.

This manual provides recommendations for safely memorializing someone who has died by suicide. These messaging guidelines can also be applied to online memorials and online messages about the deceased.
